The possibilities of unplowed texture and the management of color mixing intrigue me. I paint to articulate inspiration of moments, people, and places. The ultimate goal is CLARITY. My goal is clarity simply because clarity is peaceful.

The materials I use spread out like a tool buffet. Palette knives, muds, non-toxic colorants, and sand are just a few key tools within reach.

Experimentation is enmeshed in my process. I want to tell stories through my work. Therefore,I experiment with my VISUAL VOCABULARY. Currently, I seek transparency with opaque material by confronting coarse textures. My first work with transparency was watercolor, an inherently transparent medium. Understanding transparency is a driving force in my work.

I practice composition with photography. I discipline myself to take walks in the woods and around downtown with my camera to return to my studio and choose a handful of shots to print and file in my images collection. When I am ready to start a new piece, I browse my own images for reference. And, of course, there are the images that don't wait, so I paint immediately!

Before my current body of work, I assisted a Cincinnati master faux painter for five years. His emphasis on consistency and integrity in each layer has carried over as a value in my work. He was adamant about identifying a texture’s consistency by the way it felt and not by the way it looked. His term for this was “dancing hands”.  I identify with letting go of layers so new ones surface. I am determined and committed to build on this foundation.
